Why is breast implant removal needed?

Breast implants, while long-lasting, are not permanent. They typically last about 10-15 years. Sometimes breast implants rupture, ripple, or leak and need to be replaced, while other times complications such as capsular contracture or BII (Breast Implant Illness) necessitate the complete removal of the implants. Lastly, some women undergo breast explant because they change their minds about their aesthetic preferences and desire a less dramatic increase in cup size.

If needed, Dr. Engineer can perform a breast lift or fat transfer procedure to enhance your results and ensure the chest appears natural, feminine, and balanced after implant removal.

Breast Implant Removal FAQ

How long will my procedure take?

Breast implant removal typically takes 1-3 hours, depending on the degree of scar tissue in the capsule, whether the implants leaked or ruptured, and whether breast lift or fat transfer is performed at the same time as the explant.

What will my scars be like?

Usually Dr. Engineer is able to use the same incision to remove the implants as was used to insert them, i.e., the inframammary fold incision. This will prevent additional scarring. If this is not possible, then Dr. Engineer will do his utmost best to minimize your scars from new incisions. If the new incision is placed surrounding the nipple, scarring will be well-hidden in the darker pigments of the areola.

Does insurance cover breast implant removal?

Insurance companies will only cover procedures they deem medically necessary. In cases where silicone gel implants ruptured and are causing pain, part or all of the procedure may be covered by insurance. The same holds true for more serious cases of capsular contracture. Lastly, if an infection or Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) occurs, the insurance company may compensate you. For all other conditions, it is best to just consult with your insurance carrier and find out their policy.

Can I combine breast implant removal with a breast lift?

Yes, many patients choose to combine breast implant removal with a breast lift to address sagging or loss of volume after the implants are removed. This can enhance the overall appearance and restore a more youthful breast shape.

Will I need drains after breast implant removal?

In some cases, drains may be used to prevent fluid buildup after breast implant removal, especially if there is significant scar tissue or if a capsulectomy is performed. Drains typically stay in place for a few days and are removed once fluid accumulation decreases.

How soon can I resume exercise after breast implant removal?

Patients are generally advised to avoid strenuous exercise for about 4-6 weeks after breast implant removal. Light activities like walking can typically be resumed within a few days, but more intense activities should be postponed to allow proper healing.
